Greetings Polykillers, I'm Brian
You've probably heard Travis and Jake mention me a few times in the podcast. Well, they graciously invited me to write some blog posts for the shiny new website and I'm happy to oblige.
So where do I fall in the Jake-Travis spectrum of gamers? If Jake is the new, shiny, early-access gamer, and Trav the frugal retro gamer, then I fall somewhere in the middle. I mostly enjoy playing newer games, but I'm also pretty frugal, and rarely pay full price for a game. I also enjoy the occasional retro game, and have a small collection of old consoles (that is laughably tiny compared to Travis's collection - but that's the only thing that's laughably tiny compared to Travis). That probably makes me pretty average among 30+ year old gamers.
As far as genres go, I always enjoy a good horror game (and some bad ones), and am really big into open world RPGs. Playing Resident Evil on the PS1 is one of my fondest gaming memories, and I have spent ungodly amounts of time playing everything that has come out of Bethesda since Morrowind. I've also really fallen for the Telltale-style game ever since Walking Dead Season 1, and I loved the turn-based tactics of XCOM so much I played Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within (which are basically the same game, if you didn't know). I actually wish Firaxis-style games were a thing in the same way Telltale-style games are a thing. I would love a turn-based tactical Gears of War, for example.
So what am I playing currently? Games I've recently beaten include Fallout 4 and Condemned 2. I'll probably go back to Fallout when some DLC comes out, but I've completed the story, so I'm considering it "done".
Games on my backlog:
Dragon Age Inquisition - This game had to take a back seat when Fallout came out, but now I look forward to getting back into it.
SOMA - picked this up in the Steam sale. Currently a couple hours in, and I'm loving it.
Halo 5
Gears of War Ultimate
My long play:
Hearthstone
Hearthstone
more Hearthstone
Hopefully that gives you an idea of where I'm coming from so you have some context for future blog posts. My goal for this blog is to post about once a week, and I want it to be a bit interactive. Tweet your questions and comments to @HokieBriz, and I'll try to incorporate them into the next post.
